Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia’s Immigration Department sets a target of carrying out 1,300 operations monthly to weed out illegal immigrants and errant employers, according to New Straits Times.
Immigration Director-General Mustafar Ali said the figure exceeded the department’s initial target of 850 operations per month.
Mustafar said last month, 1,327 operations were conducted to track down employers and illegal workers. Since Ops Mega was launched in early July, more than 19,000 illegal immigrants and 427 employers had been detained.
The department is moving towards digitalising its daily operations by introducing online applications, as well as e-payment systems to reduce corruption and abuse of power.
Ops Mega came after the E-card (enforcement card) registration ended on June 30. The E-card programme was launched on February 15 as a temporary confirmation of employment for illegal workers from 15 countries, including Vietnam.
It also aims to meet employers’ high demand for foreign workers after the Malaysian stopped brining in foreign labours. However, at the end of June 30, many illegal foreign workers and employers have not registered for the programme, prompting the Malaysian Government to conduct the largest-ever Ops Mega.-VNA
