Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - Malaysia and Thailand have reiterated their common stance on issues concerning the East Sea, urging all parties to respect the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Thai counterpart Paetongtarn Shinawatra on December 16, Anwar said both leaders underscored the importance of the full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and the early conclusion of an effective and substantive Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
He said both countries want issues on the waters to be dealt with peacefully and constructively, in accordance with universally recognised principles of international law, including 1982 UNCLOS.
He emphasised the shared stance of both countries on Myanmar, committing to fully implement the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) through informal dialogues at various levels to ensure Myanmar's participation and restore its significant role in ASEAN.
In a joint statement, Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Thailand expressed its full support for Malaysia's leadership in addressing the Myanmar situation as the ASEAN Chair in 2025. Thailand reaffirmed its unwavering support for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 and pledged close cooperation, particularly on the sustainable development agenda.
Both leaders reiterated their support for existing energy cooperation and initiatives, which are pivotal to the shared vision of a more integrated, sustainable, and secure energy future for the region, including the ASEAN Power Grid Initiative./.
