Malaysia is looking to expand its cooperation with other ASEAN member states to combat piracy.
The cooperation will help address several legal issues involved in piracy prevention, General Director of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Mohd Amdan Kurish told reporters after the opening ceremony of the ASEAN Seminar on Piracy, Sea Robbery and Maritime Terrorism on February 24.
He said that Malaysia retains its close ties with Singapore and Indonesia and intends to intensify collaboration with other regional countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines.
Last year, 14 piracy cases were discovered in the South of the East Sea, six of which were apprehended.
The seminar, held by the MMEA and the Ministry of Home Affairs, will last until February 26, drawing over 60 delegates from the 10 ASEAN member states, namely Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei, the Philippines and Vietnam, with Japan as an observing country.-VNA
