Malaysian PM orders relief to refugees

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has ordered the Royal Navy and the Maritime Enforcement Agency to assist the medical relief society Mercy Malaysia to deliver humanitarian aid to refugees both on land and at sea.

The PM said the activity is to ensure the refugees will be given food and water while the sick will be attended to with medical treatment and supplies.

Earlier, the Malaysian and Indonesian foreign ministers announced that they had reached a breakthrough in dealing with illegal migration by temporarily allowing refugee ships to dock.

It was reported that 1,158 Bangladeshis and Rohingya refugees from Myanmar landed illegally by boat in Malaysia’s Langkawi Island on May 10, with the figure reported to be the largest to date.-VNA
