Over 1,700 domestic and foreign representatives attended a meeting in Hanoi on October 13 in response to Global Hand-washing Day, which falls on October 15.
Jointly organised by the Vietnamese Ministry of Health, the Unilever Foundation and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the event has the slogan “Clean hands save lives” and its driving theme is children and schools.
Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said the World Health Organisation advises that hand-washing with soap can reduce the risk of infecting diarrhoea by 35 percent.
Long called on relevant ministries and departments to raise pubic awareness of washing hands with soap, turning the action into a habit towards improving the people’s health.
On the occasion, a roll of cloth measuring 2,000m in length and 3.5m in width won the recognition of the Vietnam Record Organisation for being imprinted with the largest number of fingerprints, which reach 100,000 taken from those supporting the campaign to wash hands with soap.-VNA
