Mekong Delta chases tourism boom

The Mekong Delta region will try to lure more visitors from now until 2020 by introducing memorable cruises, luxury resort tours, exciting festivals and ecologically-friendly promotions.

The key focus points of the programme will include Can Tho city and the provinces of An Giang, Kien Giang and Hau Giang, where cruise and business tours, festivals and beach resort services will all be offered.

The Ca Mau peninsula cluster with Ca Mau, Bac Lieu and Soc Trang provinces will take visitors to mangrove forests and Khmer festivals.

The eastern coastal cluster comprising Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Vinh Long and Tra Vinh will focus on tours of rivers, craft villages and revolutionary relic sites.

Meanwhile, Dong Thap Muoi cluster in Long An and Dong Thap will mesmerise holidaymakers with tours around flooded forests and wetlands.

From now until 2015, the localities will ramp up their lodging and entertainment infrastructure to world-class standards, while My Tho, Can Tho, Chau Doc, Rach Gia and Phu Quoc tourist ports will be up and running.
 
They will also liaise with partners in Southeast Asia and the Greater Mekong Sub-region, with a focus given to Cambodia. Other markets in North-eastern Asia, Western Europe and Northern America will receive continued attention.

Last year, it recorded nearly 24 million arrivals with 2 million foreigners, generating over 4.8 trillion VND (220 million USD) in revenue, up 11 percent from 2012.-VNA
