The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho has approved a project to build a fisheries centre for the region, announced Director of the municipal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Pham Van Quynh on May 7.
At a working session with the Republic of Korea’s institute for applied agriculture, Quynh said that the project will cover an area of about 110 hectares in Hung Phu 1 industrial zone in Tan Phu ward, Cai Rang district of Can Tho with an investment of 400 million USD.
The project will focus on human resources training, scientific research, aquatic technology transfer and trade promotion. It will also include a fishery entrepot for the Mekong Delta as well as domestic and overseas markets alongside with a regional fishery research institute, aqua-product processing complexes and a fresh water aqua-product trading floor.
When operational, the centre will facilitate the active and sustainable development of the Mekong Delta’s fishery industry, boost regional economic development and bring into play localities’ strengths.
It will also provide services to support production, such as improving the management of product quality and developing a fishery supporting industry for the region.-VNA
