The Mekong delta has set a target of exporting 5.4 million tonnes of rice each year in the 2012-2015 period to major markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
To fulfill the target, the Mekong Delta said it will take firm measures to ensure rice export by improving the quality of rice, diversifying rice products, and sharpening its competitive edge to maintain traditional markets and meet the requirements of new markets.
In addition, the region will move to improve co-ordination between production and consumption, stabilise the price of rice and prevent dumping.
In 2011, the region exported 6.2 million tonnes of rice for 3.1 billion USD, year-on-year increases of 11 percent in volume and 23 percent in value./.
