The Mekong Delta provinces have devised concrete measures to ensure aconstant supply of fresh water for production and daily life, despitethe threat of climate change, according to the Southern Institute ofWater Resources Research (SIWRR).

The provinces aimto restructure local land use, regulate the water supply foragricultural production in coastal areas, and demarcate areas accordingto the water types present.

They also strive toaddress fresh water shortages in Mekong Delta rivers, while reservingrainwater and connecting with other local water sources to ensure thesupply for agricultural production during the dry season.

Sea dykes and embankments will also be reinforced along the rivers ofHam Luong, Cai Lon, Cai Be and Vam Co to prevent sea tide invasion.

According to the institute, such an intrusion of salty water isexpected to affect almost all parts of the delta, especially along theWest Sea coastal area and the Ca Mau peninsula, during this year’s dryseason and in the long run.

Surveys show that thelocal irrigation water regulation systems have seen serious degradationand damage, especially in saline water areas to the north of NationalHighway 1A in Bac Lieu province.

In Kien Giang province, salt water has entered 4-6 km inland.

Many areas in An Giang and Bac Lieu have also been affected by salinewater, causing difficulties for local agricultural production.-VNA
