Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a list of selected news summaries reported last weekend by the Vietnam News Agency.

- The first Son La Coffee Festival opened in Son La city of the northern mountainous province with the same name on October 20, with the presence of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

Nguyen Huu Dong, Secretary of the provincial Party’s Committee, said the festival is an important event designed for Son La and other northwestern provinces to introduce their Arabica coffee and honour coffee growers, processors and  traders, contributing to promoting the value and the position of Son La Arabica coffee in domestic and foreign markets. - Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Le Van Thanh has proposed that Singapore consider the official acceptance of Vietnamese workers through its Visa Work Permit scheme.

Meeting Singaporean Senior Minister of State for Defence and Manpower Zaqy Mohamad in Hanoi on October 20, Thanh suggested that Singapore expand the number of industries that accept Vietnamese workers, and strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in transport ship crew supply. Read full story

- The Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs is finalising a draft decree to amend and supplement some provisions of the Government’s Decree No. 20/2021 on social assistance policies for social protection beneficiaries.

- The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) convened the eighth World Investment Forum (WIF) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from October 16-20, focusing its discussions on investment challenges faced by developing nations amid the ongoing crisis.

A Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Quoc Phuong attended and delivered speeches at the Enterprise Ministerial Roundtable, a symposium on financing the just energy transition partnerships: perspectives from Vietnam, Indonesia and South Africa, a high-level roundtable on investment in the energy transition, and a symposium on Industry 4.0 and the future of global investment. - Vladimir Moiseenko, Director of the Napalkova cancer centre in St. Petersburg – one of Russia's leading cancer diagnosis and treatment establishments, expressed his interest in further enhancing collaboration in cancer treatment with Vietnam at a recent interview with the Vietnam News Agency.

Moiseenko, also a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said cancer is on the rise in every country, particularly in developing nations like Vietnam. Successful cancer treatment largely depends on early detection, and it is crucial to focus on identifying tumours at an early stage. Read full story

- A programme specifically designed for needy couples facing infertility issues is expected to help 100 couples to have the chance to expect their first child after unsuccessful attempts.

Initiated in 2014, it has so far assisted nearly 500 couples undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The expected number of couples in the 2023 edition is 100, the highest to date. Read full story

- Vietnamese and Japanese chefs are set to serve a unique fusion of street food of the two countries within the framework of the Japanese Culture Festival which is scheduled to take place in Hanoi next month.

According to the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations, Japan will carry out a street food initiative to promote the culinary culture of both sides. Read full story./.
