In a meeting with French Ambassador to Myanmar Olivier Richard, Deputy Minister of Justice U Win Myint, who is also President of the International Institute of Research Against Counterfeit Medicines (IRACM) of Myanmar, warned of the danger of counterfeit medicine trading and consumption in countries worldwide, including Myanmar.
He stressed that it is necessary to have effective laws to prevent production of fake medicines.
Myanmar is paying special attention to fighting fake medicines because domestic pharmaceutical production has yet to meet the demand and the country has to import medicines.
The country joined the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime, and adopted the National Drug Law in 1992, which was revised in 2014.
In December last year, local authorities seized a large volume of pharmaceuticals worth over 21.8 billion kyat (1.32 million USD) under a campaign in Yangon city.
Myanmar will work with nations in the Mekong sub-region to organise a seminar on law and policy to prevent fake medicines.-VNA
