Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar’s President U Htin Kyaw on August 8 pledged to work for the development of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) basing on principles.

He also called for support for Myanmar people during their nation-building process, which, he said, will contribute to the success of ASEAN.

In a message delivered on ASEAN’s 49th founding anniversary, President U Htin Kyaw said 2016 features the first year of ASEAN operating as a single community and it kick-started the process to realise the ASEAN Community Vision towards 2025.

He noted Myanmar is proud of the contributions to the establishment of the ASEAN Community, which were made when it held the Presidency of the bloc in 2014.

The President showed support for the underway ASEAN presidency by Laos in 2016.

U Htin Kyaw envisaged that the ASEAN Community in the next decade will be closely bonded politically, economically, and socially that operates around the people and on the basis of principles.-VNA
