Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi on April 22 stressed that the new government will implement a people-centred foreign policy, citing that economic and social development cannot be achieved without the participation of the people.
Speaking about the country's foreign policy with a group of 63 foreign diplomats at the Foreign Office in Nay Pyi Taw, the Foreign Minister reiterated that since Myanmar declared independence in 1948, the country has followed an independent, and active foreign policy, dealing closely and in a friendly manner with neighbouring countries and the world’s nations.
She underlined the important role of people-to-people engagement in foreign relations, affirming that relationships between countries can only be long lasting when the best relationship between their peoples is fostered.
It was the first official meeting by Aung Suu Kyi with foreign diplomats as Foreign Minister, since her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD) formed the new government and took office on April 1.
