Myanmar has tightened security in the Yangon region, particularly religious buildings, in response to threat from the terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda.
The Yangon Region Security and Border Affairs Ministry on September 23 said that patrols are being strengthened while entry points are under strict supervision through cameras.
Armed forces have also increased the number of checkpoints and closely monitored the possible entering of terrorists.
Minister Tin Win asked Myanmar people to immediately report any things they find suspect.
These security measures has been undertaken since Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri’s recent video announcement of the launch of a new branch in the Indian subcontinent with the aim of expanding jihad to the region.
Ayman al Zawahiri also declared the group’s new focus on Myanmar , Bangladesh and India .
The Burmese Muslim Association urged people to live together in harmony regardless of racial and religious differences, and stated that the Muslims in Myanmar will not tolerate any threat to the country.-VNA
