A month-long curfew was lifted on August 11 in Mandalay, the second largest city in the north of Myanmar, according to local officials.
Seven townships of the riotous city were placed under the 8-hour curfew (from 9pm to 5am) from July 3. Since then, some 1,400 people got heavy fine for violating the curfew order.
The order was imposed following a riot over an alleged rape case on July 1 in Chanaye Tharzan, which killed two and injured 17 others. The Myanmar authorities have so far arrested 56 suspects for their involvement in the unrest and punished many on the charges of murder, arson, causing damage, incitement and illegal possession of weapons.
Ethnic and religious conflicts are among the most serious social problems in Myanmar. Clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Rakhine, one of the hot spots in the country, since 2012 have took the lives of more than 250 people.-VNA
