Hanoi (VNA) – Htin Kyaw from the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi has become one of the three final candidates in Myanmar’s presidental race, the country’s lower house of parliament confirmed on March 11.
He earned 274 out of 317 votes, winning against Sai Mauk Kham of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).
The upper house has chosen Henry Van Htee Yu, also an NLD member, as its candidate for president. Meanwhile, Myint Swe, current Yangon Region chief minister, was selected by the military group to join the race.
The parliament set three groups representing the two houses and the military to select one candidate from each group for the final round of election as president . Through voting, the winner will take the presidency, while the other two will become vice presidents.
Myanmar’s parliament is scheduled to conduct presidential voting on March 17 or 18 and the new president will take office on April 1.-VNA
