Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on September 3 declared that the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference is an event of historic significance – the first step on the path to peace.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the four-day event, Suu Kyi affirmed that people’s involvement is the key factor to the pursuit of peace, urging the strengthening of capability to resolve disagreements and collaboration with each other with respect.

There were heated debates between delegates when they presented different points of view and stances, she said.

The 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference opened in the capital of Nay Pyi Taw on August 31 with the goal of unifying all ethnic groups in Myanmar and building a democratic federal via dialogue.

The conference focused on the framework of national political dialogue to end conflicts between the national army and ethnic armed groups over the past nearly seven decades.

It drew the participation of 1,800 delegates representing the government, the national assembly, the army, political parties, ethnic armed and non-armed organisations and civil social organisations.-VNA
