Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar President-elect U Htin Kyaw on March 25 proposed the country’s Union Parliament to form a new Union Election Commission to prepare for the next general election.

According to the president’s proposal, the new commission will have five members, led by Hla Thein. The others will be U Aung Myint, U Soe Ye, U Tun Khin and U Hla Tint.

U Mann Khaing Than, Speaker of the Union Parliament, said the national assembly will approve the president’s proposal on March 28 if there are no objections.

On March 15, Htin Kyaw, 69, of the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi, was elected as Myanmar’s first civilian President in decades.

Htin Kyaw's sworn-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 1.-VNA
