Myanmar steps up efforts to search for jade mine landslide victims

Hanoi (VNA) – At least one person was killed ina jade mine landslide in Myanmar’s Kachin state on December 22, announced thecountry’s search and rescue teams on the same day.

The body was found at the scene while about 100 other wentmissing. Twenty-five injured people were rushed to the hospital.

About 200 rescuers are stepping up efforts to search for themissing and some were using boats in a nearby lake.

The landslide took place in Hpakant region of Kachin stateat 4am on December 22 (local time).

About 80 people were feared to be swept into a lake afterthe incident.

Myanmar produces up to 90 percent of the world’s jade. The mostrecent landslide occurred at a mine in Kachin in July 2020, claiming more than170 lives. Another case in Kachin killed at least 113 people in 2015./.
