Netherlands finances 19.5 million USD for climate adaptation project in Vinh Long

Deputy Minister of Finance Tran Xuan Ha and Dutch Ambassador to Vietnam Elsbeth Akkerman have signed an agreement for Development Related Investment Infrastructure Vehicle (DRIVE) funded by the Netherlands Invest International, to support the Vinh Long Climate Resilience Project, the Vietnam Government Portal (VGP) reported.

Hanoi (VNA) - Deputy Minister of Finance Tran Xuan Ha and DutchAmbassador to Vietnam Elsbeth Akkerman have signed an agreement for DevelopmentRelated Investment Infrastructure Vehicle (DRIVE) funded by the NetherlandsInvest International, to support the Vinh Long Climate Resilience Project, theVietnam Government Portal (VGP) reported.

Under the agreement, the Netherlands grants 19.5 million USD (EUR 16.5 million)to the aforesaid project totaling 202.2 million USD (EUR 170 million) in VinhLong city to make the city more climate resilient and to protect its peopleagainst flood risks, she said.

The rest of the amount is covered by the World Bank and by Vinh Long province.The significant amount of Dutch grant, played a crucial role to make theproject possible, added Akkerman.

The Dutch grant will be provided to build a water treatment plant in Vinh Longcity in the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long.

The water treatment plant is a component of the wider Vinh Long City UrbanDevelopment and Enhanced Climate Resilience Project.

The objective of this project is to improve access to infrastructure andconnectivity and to reduce flood risk in the urban area of Vinh Long city.

The project has the following components: flood risk management andenvironmental sanitation; flood risk mitigation and urban drainage; wastewatercollection and treatment; strategic corridors development; and resettlementarea development.

The Embassy of the Netherlands strongly supports this project as it synergizeswith different core elements of the Strategic Partnership Agreement on ClimateChange Adaptation and Water Management that was signed between the Vietnameseand Netherlands government in 2010.

Vietnam and the Netherlands are both committed to achieve the SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) and for that public and private interests oftencoincide, highlighted Ambassador Akkerman./.

Emission standards for motorcycles to be issued in July

Under the draft, motorcycles produced before 2008 will be subject to the lowest level of inspection standards, level 1, while those manufactured from 2008 onwards will be assessed to a higher standard. Similar rules will also apply to motorised vehicles, with level 1 for those manufactured before 2016.

Vietnam consults stakeholders on climate change scenarios

The 2025 scenarios build on Vietnam’s 2020 projections, incorporating the latest findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s sixth assessment report and insights from domestic and global partners. The goal is to guide policymaking, urban planning, and local adaptation strategies.

Lang Son becomes Vietnam’s 4th global geopark

Lang Son Global Geopark spans over 4,842 square kilometres, roughly 58% of the province, and is home to around 627,500 people. It features a rich blend of geological wonders and cultural heritage, including stunning caves and sinkholes such as Nguom Mooc Cave, Tham Lum and Ung Roac. Its biodiversity is also protected within the Huu Lien Nature Reserve.
