Ninh Thuan (VNA) – The south-central province of Ninh Thuan has applied measures to restructure its fisheries sector and support local fishermen to develop a high-capacity fleet for higher efficiency in offshore fishing.

This year, the provine targets 119,500 tonnes of seafood, with 70 percent being caught offshore.

According to the provincial Sub-Department of Fisheries, thanks to the support to fishermen in upgrading their boats, so far Ninh Thuan has had 2,236 vessels with length of at lest 6m, including 778 with at least 15m in length that are able to conduct offshore fishing.

Along with encouraging local fishermen to install modern devices, including Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) which have been used in 97.4 percent of the boats, Ninh Thuan has also supported the formation of a production connectivity model at sea to improve operational efficiency, safe cost and promote mutual support during natural disasters or incidents.

Head of the Sub-Department Dang Van Tin said that the province has also focused on fighting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing as recommended by the European Commission (EC) and ensuring security and safety at sea by popularising legal regulations in the fields and strictly handling violations.

Alongside, local authorities have strengthened supervision to prevent illegal fishing in foreign waters, said Tin.

In order to enhance its production capacity, Ninh Thuan has also mobilised resources to build and expand fishing ports and encouraged businesses to invest in fisheries logistics development, while improving the efficiency of fishery resources forecast to help local fishermen build their own production plans, he added.

Last year, total fisheries production of Ninh Thuan hit 124,051 tonnes, exceeding its yearly target by 3.8 percent, representing a 4.9 percent rise year on year./.
