No fatality of measles was recorded in the country on April 22 while new cases are on the decline, the Preventive Health Department of the Ministry of Public Health has reported.

Thirteen provinces out of the 61 provinces and cities hit by measles reported no new cases of the disease on the day. They were Bac Kan, Ha Tinh, Dien Bien, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Vung Tau, Tien Giang, Long An, Tay Ninh, An Giang, Dong Thap, and Bac Lieu.

The day saw 46 new measles cases reported by 25 provinces and cities, which brought the total infected cases to 3,527 since the beginning of the year across 61 out of the country’s 63 provinces and cities. The fatalities directly caused by the disease remained 25.

Vaccination against measles saw good response with 25 provinces posting the rate of over 70 percent.

The Health Ministry’s working teams are going to provinces and cities across the country to examine the implementation of preventive measures and vaccination campaign.

At a conference evaluating the ongoing outbreak in Hanoi on April 22, Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen reiterated that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles.

The major reason behind the current outbreak in Vietnam is the poor vaccination, along with the humid weather conditions that allow respiratory diseases to spread quickly, Xuyen said.

The event came up with guidelines to diagnose and treat measles for representatives of the ministry’s agencies and local departments in the northern region.

No mutation in the strain of the measles virus has been detected, confirmed the conference. Most of the fatalities resulted from pneumonia connected to measles.-VNA
