Hanoi (VNA) – The Oracle Corp announced on October 2 that it had planned to spend 6.5 billion USD to build its first public cloud region in Malaysia.
Oracle’s commitment is the latest major investment by a major US tech giant in Southeast Asia - a region that is rapidly becoming a hub for cloud services due to its abundant land, government support and rapidly growing market.
Alphabet Inc, Google’s parent company, said on September 30 that it aimed to invest 1 billion USD to build data centress in Thailand, in addition to similar projects for Malaysia. Meanwhile, Amazon.com Inc. unveiled 9 billion USD-plan in Singapore in May this year. Microsoft Corp. has also mulled over about 4 billion USD to build data centres and other infrastructure for the region.
Oracle is expanding its cloud infrastructure business globally to compete for a share of the AI sector. However, the company did not provide a time frame or specific details about what it plans to build in Malaysia.
The market for AI-related products could reach 990 billion USD by 2027, according to consulting firm Bain & Company, in the context that the application of this technology is disrupting the operations of companies and economies./.
