Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s General Elections Commission (KPU) on April 18 announced that more than 205 million Indonesians living in and outside the country are in a provisional voter list (DPS) for the 2024 general election, slated for February 14, 2024.
Speaking at a plenary meeting of the KPU on April 18, KPU Chairman Hasyim Asy said that among the total, there are over 102.8 million men and 103 million women.
The list is based on reports from 38 provinces/cities in the country and a number of voting stations overseas. It is expected that Indonesia will set up 823,287 voting sites in the country and abroad.
Data from the KPU showed that 192.8 million individuals were eligible to vote in the 2019 election. More than 55% of the voters, or 85.6 million people, cast their ballots for incumbent President Joko Widodo.
KPU also announced a total of 17 parties are expected to compete in the 2024 election, as compared to 14 in 2019.
These political parties are now haggling over which politicians they nominate as president in next year’s election.
Currently, three politicians at the top of public opinion polls are Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan./.
