Hanoi (VNA) – The Myanmar government on May 7 granted amnesty to 6,520 prisoners as the third batch as a gesture to mark the country's traditional New Year.

According to an order of President U Win Myint, the release of the prisoners was made on grounds of humanity and to contribute to the national reconciliation process, raising the total number of released inmates to 23,019 on this occasion.

As part of the first batch on April 17, over 9,500 prisoners, including 16 foreigners, were set free, followed by nearly 7,000 others as the second batch two days later.

During the same period last year, the Myanmar President signed a similar decree pardoning more than 8,500 prisoners, including 51 foreigners.-VNA
