Parliamentary diplomacy helps raise Vietnam’s stature in int'l arena: NA leader

The 14th-tenure National Assembly (NA) has performed its duties well in all aspects, including parliamentary diplomacy, helping to raise Vietnam’s stature in the international arena and contributing to the country's development, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue said on April 29.

Hanoi (VNA) – The 14th-tenure NationalAssembly (NA) has performed its duties well in all aspects, includingparliamentary diplomacy, helping to raise Vietnam’s stature in theinternational arena and contributing to the country's development, NA Chairman VuongDinh Hue said on April 29.

At a working session with the NA’s Committee for External Relations,the top legislator noted aside from assisting the parliament in making laws, conductingsupervision, and issuing decisions on important issues, the committee has coordinatedthe NA’s relations with other countries’ parliaments and international andregional inter-parliamentary organisations under the direction of the NAStanding Committee and the NA chairperson.

He said the committee has done a good job of advising the NAand its Standing Committee about external parliamentary relations, activelytaken part in international and regional parliamentary forums, and coordinatedwell with diplomatic activities of the Party, the Government, and the people.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it helped the NA successfullychair the 41st General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-ParliamentaryAssembly (AIPA 41) via videoconference last year.

In the time ahead, he requested, the committee needs to makean action plan to push ahead with reforming and improving its performance, thushelping to continue bringing into play the pioneering role of diplomacy increating and maintaining a peaceful and stable environment, mobilising externalresources for national development, and promoting Vietnam’s position andprestige in line with the viewpoint on and major orientations for diplomacystated in the documents of the 13th National Party Congress.

It should identify the focal and strategic issues, as wellas the key targets in bilateral and multilateral activities with the ultimategoal of working to guarantee the legitimate interests of the State,enterprises, and the people, Hue said, demanding attention to economicdiplomacy that centres on the people and businesses./.
