Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong received visiting Singaporean President Tony Tan Keng Yam in Hanoi on Apr. 24.
The General Secretary thanked the Singaporean President for selecting Vietnam as the first country to visit after beginning his term of office, describing the visit as a vivid symbol of friendship, trust and cooperation between the two countries.
He congratulated Singapore on its socio-economic development achievements and affirmed Vietnam ’s policy to attach importance to developing friendship and cooperation with Singapore .
The Vietnamese leader expressed his determination to join with Singapore to boost comprehensive cooperation, focusing on economic trade, national defence and security, education and training, oil and gas, and justice, as well as to coordinate at multilateral forums, including ASEAN and the UN, for mutual benefits and for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
For his part, President Tony Tan Keng Yam stated Singapore ’s policy of enhancing cooperation with Vietnam and being ready to share experience with Vietnam in investment, trade, urban infrastructure, seaports and human resource training.
He said that Vietnam ’s achievements under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam in recent years elevate Vietnam to an important role in the region and in the world.
He expressed his belief that Vietnam would continue to gain greater socio-economic development achievements, to become an industrialised country by 2020./.
