The Philippines and US on September 29 held an annual naval exercise in the western Filipino city of Puerto Princesa, involving nearly 5,000 soldiers.

The 12-day drills, dubbed as the Philippine Amphibious Landing Exercise (Phiblex), aim to improve response to regional issues, humanitarian disaster and marine security in the Asia-Pacific.

The soldiers will be trained in firing with live ammunition, amphibious assault and operational command.

Phiblex came as the Philippines is enhancing military exercises with the US and its defence ties with other countries.

According to Singapore’s daily Straits Times, Philippines recently upgraded its defence relationship with Singapore.

From next year, both sides will hold annual defence dialogue at the deputy ministerial level.-VNA
