Hanoi (VNA) – The Philippines warned people to keep away from Mayon volcano at least 6km in case the country’s most active volcano erupts suddenly.
In its announcement at 8am on May 25, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that Mayon volcano’s seismic monitoring network recorded two volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours.
Moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes that rose 300 metres from the summit before drifting southwest, west-southwest and west-northwest was observed throughout the day.
Alert Level 2, out of five levels, currently prevails over Mayon Volcano, which means that Mayon is at a moderate level of unrest. However, the institute reminds the public of sudden explosions, lava collapses, pyroclastic density currents and ashfall can still occur and threaten areas in the upper to middle slopes of Mayon.
The 2,464m-high mountain, located on Luzon island in Albay province, is the most active volcano in the Philippines. Over the past 400 years, the volcano has erupted 51 times. The eruption in 1814 killed over 1,200 people and occluded three towns.-VNA
