The Prime Minister has agreed to the recommendation of the Ministry of Transport and Kien Giang province on appointing a contractor to build the Phu Quoc International Passenger Port.
The port will be built at Duong Dong town, the biggest on Phu Quoc, the country’s increasingly popular tourist island destination. It will have a capacity of receiving ships of up to 225,000 gross tonnages (GT).
A 400m-long wharf will be built together with a 1,020m-long bridge connecting the wharf to the shore.
It is expected that between 105,000 and 190,000 tourists will arrive in Phu Quoc by sea from now until 2020. The number will rise to between 350,000 and 550,000 by 2030.
Phu Quoc, also called Pearl Island, in the southern province of Kien Giang is the largest island in Vietnam with a total area of about 580 square kilometres.
Phu Quoc is becoming well known for its stunning beaches, the untouched natural environment, its relaxed atmosphere, friendly and easygoing local people, and fantastic scuba diving and snorkeling.
At present, visitors can fly to Phu Quoc or take take a boat to the island from Rach Gia, Kien Giang’s capital town.-VNA
