Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on April 8 received the Malaysian PM and the presidents of Indonesia and the Philippines , who are in Vietnam to attend the 16th ASEAN Summit.
Meeting with Malaysian PM Najib Bin Tun Abdul Razak, PM Dung said Vietnam will join with Malaysia to develop bilateral relations in a more effective and practical manner for the mutual benefit and prosperity of both nations.
Vietnam-Malaysia cooperative ties are growing fruitfully in all fields from politics, diplomacy, and economics, to commerce, investment, security, national defence, education, training and labour, the PM said.
Two-way trade climbed to 4 billion USD, he said, adding that Malaysia is now one of the leading foreign investors in Vietnam in construction, power, water, gas, mechanical engineering and banking.
PM Dung suggested that the joint committee should hold its meeting soon to boost cooperative relations to a new height. He invited PM Abdul Razak to officially visit Vietnam and attend the World Economic Forum on East Asia scheduled to be held in June.
PM Razak praised Vietnam’s hosting of the 16th ASEAN Summit and affirmed his support for the country’s endeavours to fulfil its duties as ASEAN 2010 chairman.
He said Malaysia wants to boost comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the areas of investment, banking, labour, tourism, education and training.
The Malaysian PM said he is looking forward to his official visit to Vietnam and attending the World Economic Forum on East Asia, stressing that firms from Malaysia were pleased with the investment environment and wished to expand investment in Vietnam.
Following the meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing of documents regarding the Jaks Resources Berhad Group’s project to build a 1,200-MW thermo-electric power plant in Hai Duong province.
PM Razak also witnessed the signing of a cooperation deal between Vietnam’s airline VietJet Air and AirAsia Berhad of Malaysia.
During his reception for Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, PM Dung said he was delighted at the positive developments in the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia, and proposed the organisation of practical and effective activities to mark their 55 years of diplomatic ties.
The government leader said Vietnam and Indonesia should step up bilateral trade and investment relations and sign a cooperation agreement on national defence, including joint maritime patrols, as well as conduct negotiations on the demarcation of the exclusive economic zone between the two countries.
He conveyed State President Nguyen Minh Triet’s invitation to President Yudhoyono to visit Vietnam and attend the World Economic Forum on East Asia.
President Yudhoyono affirmed his country’s support for Vietnam’s attendance at the G20 meeting as the ASEAN Chair, as well as support for Vietnam’s role as chair in general.
The President said he advocated stronger ties in national defence, including joint maritime patrols, and negotiations on the demarcation of the exclusive economic zone between Indonesia and Vietnam.
President Yodhoyono also expressed his hope that two-way trade value would reach 2 billion USD this year.
While receiving Philippine President Gloria Arroyo, PM Dung said the joint committee needs to hold its session early to accelerate bilateral cooperation in economics, trade and investment.
The two nations should sign memorandums of understanding on cooperation in the fields of national defence, aquaculture, education, training, and joint patrols at sea, he added.
Together with Malaysia, Vietnam is willing to discuss with the Philippines issues related to the continental shelf between the three countries in the spirit of friendly neighbourliness and cooperation within ASEAN, Dung said.
The PM noted with pleasure that Vietnam and the Philippines have smoothly cooperated at international and regional forums and bilateral cooperation in economy, trade and investment have yielded good results. He also asked the Philippines to back Vietnam ’s joining of the G20 meeting in its capacity as the Chair of ASEAN 2010.
