Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Pham MinhChinh on September 13 asked Lao Cai and other northern mountainous localities to mobilise forces to search for those who went missing in flashfloods only hours earlier.

In a dispatch, the leadernoted that over the past days, some northern localities experienced heavyrains, which triggered flash floods in Lao Cai, leaving 10 dead and missing sofar.

Chinh extended his deepest sympathies to the familiesof the victims and urged the National Steering Committee for Natural DisasterPrevention and Control, the National Committee for Disaster Response, Searchand Rescue, ministers and chairpersons of provincial People’s Committees tostay vigilant, deal with consequences of the natural disaster, and takepreparedness measures.

The National Centre for HydrometeorologicalForecasting said northern mountainous and midland localities are expected tosee more rains in the coming days which would cause floods and landslides inlow-lying areas.

The localities were asked to keep a close watch on weatherconditions, evacuate residents from disaster-prone areas to safer places, and send forces to the dangerous sites to ensure safety of residents andvehicles.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmentwas requested to continue with its weather forecast, and the Ministry ofTransport tasked with ensuring traffic safety in affected areas and smoothtransportation, especially on main routes.  

In the dispatch, the leader also assigned tasks to otherrelevant ministries and agencies, asking them to coordinate with localities in disasterprevention and control./.

To accommodate surging travel demand and keep transport operations running smoothly, the PM instructed relevant bodies to boost transport capacity, particularly public passenger services, to ensure seamless connections at railway stations, airports, bus terminals and ferry ports. Authorities were told to ensure that no travellers are left stranded or delayed in returning home for Tet due to a shortage of transport, while strictly preventing fare gouging and unlawful price hikes. Proactive measures to curb traffic accidents and congestion during the peak holiday period were also highlighted.
