As an active and responsible member of the United Nation (UN), Vietnam will do its utmost in joining the UN’s peacekeeping missions , Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has said.
He made the affirmation during his May 27 reception for visiting UN Under-Secretary General for Field Support Ameerah Haq in Hanoi, during which he emphasised the increasingly important role played by the UN in maintaining security and peace in the world.
Briefing the guest on the current tensions in the East Sea, the host also thanked UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for expressing his idea over the issue. He also called on the UN to continue raising its voice and action to ensure peace and stability in the region.
For her part, Haq welcomed Vietnam’s establishment of a peace-keeping centre and its dispatch of two officers to take part in the UN’s South Sudan mission, saying that this marks the first progress of cooperation between Vietnam and the UN in promoting an agenda on peace and security in the world.
She said the UN highly appreciates Vietnam’s contributions in this period, when the peace-keeping operations are becoming more and more complex, affirming that her agency will work to ensure safety for the two Vietnamese officers.
Following China’s act of placing its oil rig in Vietnam’s waters, Ban Ki-moon has made statement on the issue, during which he stressed that it is necessary to use peaceful measures on the basis of respect to international law to solve the issue, Haq said.
She also vowed to convey PM Dung’s appeal to Ban Ki-moon to continue taking practical actions in the issue.-VNA
