CanTho (VNA) – A project on climate change impact mitigationand disaster prevention via the public-private participation in sustainable sandexploitation in the Mekong Delta was discussed during a working session in CanTho on October 21.
Arepresentative from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said the project is underwayfrom July 2019 to June 2023 to maintain important ecological functions andmitigate socio-economic risks caused by climate change in the region.
Representativesfrom the WWF and municipal departments and agencies talked about planning onsand exploitation in the city and studies on materials in replacement of sand inconstruction.
TrinhThi Long, manager of the WWF project in Vietnam, said it will promoteparticipation and dialogue among stakeholders in Vietnam’s construction sector,provide information on risks related to sand and gravel, and seeksustainable supply of materials in replacement of sand and gravel in the MekongDelta and Can Tho in particular.
Inthe near future, a communications campaign on unsustainable sand and gravelexploitation in the Mekong Delta will be launched by the WWF to promote urgentactions to deal with the issue./.
