President Truong Tan Sang left Hanoi on September 23 for New York to attend the United Nations (UN) Summit for the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development from September 25-27.

He was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, Chairman of the Presidential Office Dao Viet Trung, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat, Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Pham Quang Vinh and Head of the Vietnam Mission to the UN Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, among others.

Over 170 State and government leaders from around the world will gather at the UN summit, making it the largest UN conference since the UN Summit to approve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2000.

Summit participants will officially adopt a new global development agenda at the plenary session, which will serve as a foundation for sustainable development through 2030.

The agenda, including 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets, is the result of active negotiations among UN member nations, including Vietnam, over the last two years.

By attending the event, Vietnam is affirming its determination to implement sustainable development goals on a global stage.

The Vietnamese State leader will take the occasion to promote the interest and viewpoints of developing countries, particularly calling for more UN support, and assert the country’s diplomatic policy of peace, cooperation, sustainable development and respect for international law.

Vietnam’s realisation of many of the 2000 summit’s MDGs, and efforts to promote regional links and ties with the UN will serve as proof of the country’s commitment.

President Sang will also take part in a UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKO) meeting, a meeting on gender equality and a meeting with the UN Secretary General.

During his stay in the US, Sang will have a policy dialogue with the Asia Society, join in a Vietnam-US business dialogue and attend the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI)’s Annual Meeting.

Later, President Sang will pay an official visit to Cuba from September 28-30 at the invitation of his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro Ruz.-VNA
