Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Dec. 13 met with outgoing US Ambassador Michael Michalak.
At the meeting, PM Dung praised contributions Ambassador Michalak had made during his tenure, especially in economics, trade, investment, education and training, and coping with impacts of climate change, which he said have contributed to boosting multifaceted relations between the two countries.
Vietnam will do its utmost, together with the US, to bring bilateral ties to a new height on the basis of friendly cooperation, mutual benefits, respect and understanding, for peace, stability and development in the region and the world at large, PM Dung said.
PM Dung expressed his wish that the two sides discuss to soon reach an agreement on civilian nuclear power cooperation and that the US would support Vietnam in negotiations to become an official member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.
For his part, Ambassador Michalak thanked the Vietnamese Government for its support to help him fulfill his tasks in Vietnam and spoke highly of Vietnam ’s success in its capacity as ASEAN Chair in 2010.
The US ambassador said past mutual visits by the two countries’ senior officials had contributed to making relations between the two countries more practical and effective.
He took the most recent visit to Vietnam by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as proof of the US desire to lift bilateral relations to strategic partnership.
The US was making efforts, together with Vietnam , to map out areas of priority for cooperation in the future, the US diplomat said.
Regardless of his future position, he would continue to give his support to bolster bilateral ties, the ambassador said./.
