At least 24 people have lost their lives to landslides, flash flood triggered by prolonged torrential rains and strong winds as a result of typhoon Rammasun that swept through northern mountainous provinces last week.
In particular, landslides killed seven people in Hoang Su Phi district, Ha Giang province, in early July 21. Meanwhile, Lai Chau province reported six deaths while they were crossing a stream in flood during intense rain.
In addition to flood and landslide victims, there were three deaths caused by lightening, according to the Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue on July 22.
The committee also reported two people injured from the calamities, which caused an estimated economic loss of around 125 billion VND (5.87 million USD).
A total of 7,000 houses in the localities were submerged or had their roofs blown down while 4,000 ha of rice and other subsidy crops were inundated.
The northern localities are promptly implementing relief work and evacuating local people living in areas hit by landslides while repairing damaged roads.
According to the Central Weather Forecasting Centre, rivers in the northern provinces are swollen, posing a potential threat of floods.
The localities were advised to keep a close watch on weather developments and take precautionary measures.-VNA
