How to promote the rights of women and children in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is the main focus of a seminar in the central city of Da Nang from August 20-22.
The event is co-organised by the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) and the UN Women’s Regional Office for Asia and Pacific, with the participation of representatives from the UN Children’s Fund, the ACWC and regional countries.
Participants are to share experience, challenges and efforts during the implementation of the Convention on the Right of the Child (CRC) and the Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
On the fringes of the seminar, there will be ten themed meetings, focusing on the global viewpoints on the rights of girls and violence against children.
Good models and examples in fighting violence against children will also be honoured on this occasion.
Participants are scheduled to make a field trip to see models of the empowerment of women in Hoi An city, central Quang Nam province.
To date, all ASEAN member countries have ratified the CRC and the CEDAW, and made significant efforts to ensure the legitimate rights of women and children.
The CRC and the CEDAW, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1989 and 1979 respectively, have been integrated into national development plans, policies and laws of all ASEAN member states.-VNA
