Hanoi (VNA) – The first day of 2016 saw 38 road accidents nationwide, leaving 22 people dead and 25 others injured.
The same day, police caught 9,000 traffic violations, revoked 338 driving licences and collected 5.5 billion VND (242,000 USD) in fines. There were 119 violations occurring on motorways, involving 25 passenger buses, 48 trucks, 27 cars, four container carriers and 15 motorbikes.
Meanwhile, 421 vehicles operating on waterways were fined 131 million VND (5,764 USD) in total.
As the New Year’s holiday lasts for three days, people flocked to train and bus stations, causing serious congestion on December 31 and January 1. Notably, in Hanoi, over 2 km of Ha Huy Tap Road, Gia Lam district was totally blocked for nearly two hours.
Areas around shopping malls – Lotte Centre, Aeon and Royal City in Hanoi and Diamond Plaza and Vincom Sai Gon Square in Ho Chi Minh City – also suffered from traffic jams from the outset of the New Year.-VNA
