Seoul (VNA) – Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Kang Kyung-wha on April 8 requested the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to maintain its support for the country’s summit with the bloc’s member countries slated for November.

Kang made the proposal while meeting ASEAN Secretary General Lim Jock in Jakarta, on the sidelines of her visit to Indonesia to attend the third ministerial joint committee session with the Southeast Asian nation.

Both sides exchanged notes on intensifying collaboration to implement the RoK’s New Southern Policy which aims to expand ties with ASEAN countries and on ensuring the success of the RoK-ASEAN special summit set to be held in the RoK later this year.

The RoK plans to hold a special summit in the southern port city of Busan from November 25-26, followed by a separate Mekong summit with Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia the next day, she shared.

Kang expressed hope for a leap in RoK-ASEAN relations through the implementation of the New Southern Policy.

For his part, Lim Jock welcomed Seoul's hosting of the summit and vowed active support from his office for the success of the event.-VNA
