Moscow (VNA) – The upcoming state visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Vietnam on June 19-20 demonstrates the Eurasian nation’s keen interest in strengthening the bilateral relations, Dr. Ivan Nikolaievich Timofeev, Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), has said.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency in Moscow, the scholar noted that the two countries have established a traditional friendship.

According to him, Vietnam, as a significant partner of Russia on the international stage, boasts a rapidly growing economy and a large market. The Southeast Asian nation has signed a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which benefits both economies. The President’s upcoming state visit signals strong commitment of Russia’s high-level leadership to these ties.

Timofeev said advancing economic and trade cooperation will be a top priority for both nations, adding that the visit will catalyse digital transformation efforts. Russia has developed a solid foundation in digital technology and is prepared to share its achievements. Additionally, the oil and gas sector remains a key area of economic cooperation between Vietnam and Russia.

With Russia assuming this year's rotary chairmanship of the BRICS group – comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the expert said there are ample favourable opportunities for both sides to expand their collaboration./.
