The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has decided to allocate 200 satellite-positioning devices to the central coastal province of Ninh Thuan as part of measures to prevent IUU fishing.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development hasdecided to allocate 200 satellite-positioning devices (Movimar) to the centralcoastal province of Ninh Thuan as part of measures to prevent illegal,unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The devices are installed on offshore fishing vessels tomonitor their journeys and provide information on weather.

The provincial People’s Committee assigned the Department ofAgriculture and Rural Development to make an installation plan with thepriority given to big vessels with capacity of over 600 CV, length of 20m ormore, and those operating ng ships.

After the installation finishes, the department shouldreport information about fishing vessels equipped with Movimar to theDirectorate of Fisheries (DoF) for update on the nation’s general system.

Nguyen Quang Hung, deputy head of the DoF said that Movimaris one of the most modern monitoring devices. Vietnam is one of the leadingcountries, especially in the Pacific, in installing this device.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu VanTam said Movimar is the only device having enough criteria to meet the EuropeanUnion’s recommendations on IUU fishing. He added that this will help Vietnamdevelop the fisheries sector sustainably.

Movimar has to date been installed on 3,000 fishing boats inVietnam.

On October 23, 2017, the EC issued a "yellow card"warning to Vietnam, after the country failed to demonstrate sufficient progressin the fight against fishing worldwide.

According to EC’s requirement, the Vietnamese seafood sectorhad to implement nine recommendations in six months from October 23, 2017, toApril 23, 2018.

As the yellow card could affect the reputation and trade ofVietnamese seafood in the European and global markets, the Vietnam Associationof Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) and businesses have made everyeffort to cooperate with authorised agencies and with one another to fight IUUfishing over the last six months.

A working delegation from the EC Directorate-General forMaritime Affairs and Fisheries is visiting Vietnam from May 16 to 23 to inspectthe country’s implementation of the EC’s nine recommendations related to thefight against IUU fishing.

After the inspection, the EU will give its final decisionover whether it seeks to withdraw the “yellow card” from Vietnamese offshoreseafood.-VNA

Two wanted for abusing religious cover to undermine national unity policy

The fugitives are Di (also known as Siu Di), born in 1941, and Dinh Yum (also known as Dinh Jum or Ba Koih), born in 1963, from Ba Na ethnic minority group in Gia Lai province, and hold Vietnamese nationality. They have been charged under Clause 1, Article 116 of the Penal Code for undermining the national unity policy.
