Sauce trademark owners usurped

HCM City-based law firm Bross&Partners Law Co has cautioned the Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association that the Phu Quoc fish sauce trademark has been registered by a local firm in Hong Kong.
HCM City-based law firm Bross&Partners Law Co has cautioned the PhuQuoc Fish Sauce Association that the Phu Quoc fish sauce trademark hasbeen registered by a local firm in Hong Kong.

Le QuangVinh, director of the law firm's Intellectual Property Department, saiddespite the geographical indication which allows only fish-sauce makerson Vietnam's Phu Quoc island to use the label, it was registered for afish sauce on May 11 by Hong Kong-based Viet Huong Trading Ltd Co.

Viet Huong has applied to relevant agencies in the Chinese regionseeking protection of the label, and Vinh warned that if Vietnam did notobject to the infringement within a certain time, the trademark wouldbe protected under Hong Kong law.

In 2001 Phu Quoc fishsauce became one of Vietnam's first products to have its appellation oforigin recognised worldwide, meaning the name can be used only
for fish sauce products made on the Vietnamese island.

Other appellations of origin worldwide include champagne (a region inFrance), tequila (a town in Mexico), and Havana (cigars)./.

Domestic consumption up over 13%, tourism continues strong growth

The total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenues in August were estimated at 679.8 trillion VND (26 billion USD), up 1.6% from the previous month and 14.9% year-on-year. In the January-August period, the figure reached 5.24 quadrillion VND, representing a 13.3% increase year-on-year.

Hanoi moves to maintain appeal to FDI inflows

In the first eight months of 2026, the capital city attracted more than 3.7 billion USD in FDI, equivalent to 83% of the plan set for the year.
