Indonesian rescue forces retrieved the second flight data recorder of the passenger plane that crashed in the easternmost province of Papua on August 16, the country’s Transport Ministry said.

Spokesman of the ministry Julius Arivada Barata said on August 20 that the recorder, the second of the two black boxes, was recovered at 12:58 pm (local time).

He said it was transported to Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, and will be delivered to the National Transport Safety Committee’s office in Jakarta on August 21 for analysis.

On August 18, the cockpit voice recorder – the other black box – was found at the crash site.

The ATR-42 turboprop plane, operated by Indonesian carrier Trigana Air, is believed to have hit a mountain while en route from Jayapura to Oksibil, the intended destination in Papua, on August 16.

All 54 people on board, including 44 adult passengers, five children and five crew members, were killed. Their bodies were recovered and transferred to a hospital in Jayapura on August 18 for identification.-VNA
