Maritime security in the East Sea was the main topic of a seminarheld at the Brussels-based European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS)on Sept. 19.
Co-hosted by the Embassies of Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia in Belgium , the seminar wasattended by the ambassadors of other ASEAN nations, internationalresearchers and reporters.
David Fouquet, a senior officialof EIAS, presented the current situation in the East Sea , stressingthat the seminar, the fourth of its kind within the framework of EIAS’sroundtable workshops on maritime security, would focus on issuesrelating to the East Sea , especially the European Union’s role inhelping solve disputes among regional countries.
Philippineand Indonesian Ambassadors Enrique A. Manalo and Arif Havas Oegrosenosated their respective countries’ viewpoints on issues relating the EastSea and voiced their concern about maritime security and safety in theregion due to the disputes.
However, both diplomats calledon the concerned parties to refrain and not to use force or threaten touse force that tense the situation, while respecting international law.
Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Sanh Chau emphasised Vietnam'sconsistent viewpoint on protecting territorial sovereignty andpersistently settling the disputes in the East Sea through peacefulmeasures based on international law, the 1982 UN Convention on the Lawof the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea(DOC), respecting territorial sovereignty and the interests of allconcerned parties, and absolutely preventing conflicts./.
