A seminar has been held in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang to review a project set up to prevent human trafficking using a range of methods, including a programme to assist and re-integrate victims from the Mekong Delta provinces.
The US State Department provided 700 million VND (33,300 USD) for the first phase of the project from 2008-2010 and 663 million VND (31,500 USD) was funded by the Kuwaiti government to complete the second phase from 2011 to the first quarter of 2012.
As part of the project, a shelter for victims of human trafficking has also been built. So far it has supported 12 victims and found jobs for 25 others.
The project will also help to raise the public’s awareness of human trafficking and apart from re-integrating people back into the community, it also provides health care and other consultative services.
According to the chief of Ho Chi minh office of the International Organisation of Migration, Trang Nguyen, An Giang which shares a 100 km border with Cambodia , is known to be used by gangs trafficking woman and children. However, the province has proved itself to be capable of helping the victims get their lives back to normal and will fighting trafficking activities after the project is over.-VNA
