Singapore has detained two men who intended to travel to Syria to join the self-claimed Islamic State group (IS), according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The 29-year-old Muhammad Shamin bin Mohamed Sidek, and the 18-year-old Muhammad Harith Jailani, were arrested in August under the internal security law, which allows for detention without trial.

There was no direct connection between the two, the ministry said, saying they were brainwashed online by accessing propaganda material from the IS.

The Singaporean Government takes a very serious view of any form of support for terrorism, it said, adding that drastic measures will be applied to any individuals who plan to get involved in violence and terrorism activities.-VNA
