The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) held a conference in Hanoi on May 28 to discuss a project to renovate the social assistance system in Vietnam .
The project’s targets are to build up a management system and realise social assistance in favour of effective poverty reduction, according to the Vietnam Government Portal (VPG).
It will support poor households with children aged 1-15 or above 15 in three pilot provinces, namely northern Ha Giang, central Quang Nam and Lam Dong in the Central Highlands.
The project aims to narrow assistance policies by offering a package of aid and separating social welfare support for minimum living standards and provision of social security services.
It also targets putting an end to the overlapping of social policies which have led to human resources losses and irregular support for the beneficiaries.
Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan proposed the re-building of a national social welfare database in line with Resolution 20/NQ-TW of the 9th Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee.
So far, 2.65 million people have got access to regular social assistance policies, 5.5 times higher than the 2006 figure.
Vietnam is home to 432 social sponsor centres which are taking care of 42,000 disadvantaged and homeless people.-VNA
