Solemn memorial ceremonies of Vo Chi Cong, former President of the State Council, were held on the early morning of Sept. 12 in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Quang Nam province.
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Tong Thi Phong and Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Huynh Dam were among the mourners at Cong’s state funeral in Ho Chi Minh City .
Party leader Trong, head of the funeral board, delivered a funeral oration, looking back on the former State leader’s life of 99 years and revolutionary career with 76 years of Party membership.
Vo Chi Cong (real name Vo Toan), born on August 7, 1912 in Tam Xuan commune, Tam Ky district, Quang Nam-Da Nang province (now Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province), was also former Politburo member, former Party Central Committee Secretary and former advisor to the Party Central committee.
He joined the grassroots youth movement in 1930 and was admitted to the Communist Party of Indochina (now the Communist Party of Vietnam) in 1935.
His life was closely connected with the revolutionary process and important historic events of the Party and people of Vietnam . Being an outstanding disciple of President Ho Chi Minh, he showed industriousness and thrift, uprightness, public-spiritedness and selflessness, and were faithful to the goals and ideal of the revolution, always putting interests of the Party and people first.
The former State leader was buried at a funeral at the municipal cemetery also the same day.
Earlier, the two days of Sept. 10 and 11, more than 700 delegations, including tens of thousands of people, paid tribute and send wreaths of flowers and messages of condolence at his state funeral in HCM City, Hanoi and Quang Nam province.
Fifty foreign and diplomatic corps delegations also paid tribute to Vo Chi Cong./.
