A four-day meeting of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Sub-Commission for Foot and Mouth Disease Control in Southeast Asia and China began in Singapore on March 19.
The 11 Southeast Asian and China Foot and Mouth Disease Campaign (SEACFMD) member countries as well as donor countries and partner organisations will address the necessity to control foot and mouth disease (FMD) at source and to protect zones and countries that are currently recognised by the OIE as being FMD-free.
They will review the resources needed to meet national and regional needs related to FMD control.
During the meeting, participants will consider aligning control strategies recommended under the revised and updated SEACFMD 2020 Roadmap aligned with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)-OIE Global Strategy for FMD Control endorsed by more than 100 countries in June 2012 during the Global Conference.
They will also consider improving linkages with other FMD programmes in the region.
Among SEACFMD member countries, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines are now officially recognised as free of FMD. FMD remains in the rest of Southeast Asia except in Malaysia’s Sabah and Sarawak which were recognised as FMD-free zones in 2004.-VNA
